Getting Started

The main screen, opening articles and the welcome tour.

Find your way around StowJarStowJar keeps the articles, videos and posts you save in one private place, sorted into lists and tags, and saved for reading offline.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open StowJar. On iPhone you start on the main screen, titled StowJar. On iPad the same lists sit in a sidebar on the left, with Unread open beside it.
  2. Above the tiles is Search your jar: type to search every link you've saved, or to jump to a tag or saved search. On iPad it's at the top of the sidebar.
  3. At the top are four tiles with counts: Unread, Starred, Read and All. Below them are a wide Highlights tile and a Reading Streak tile.
  4. Tap a tile to open that list. On iPhone, tap the back button at the top left to return to the main screen.
  5. Scroll down to Tags to see your tags, each with a count. Tap a tag to see the links that have it.
  6. Use the buttons at the top: the gear at the top left opens Settings, the + button adds a link, and the question-mark button opens Help.

On the Mac

  1. Open StowJar. The window has three columns: the sidebar on the left, the list in the middle, and the article on the right.
  2. Above the tiles is Search your jar: type to search every link you've saved, or to jump to a tag or saved search.
  3. At the top of the sidebar are the Unread, Starred, Read and All tiles, a wide Highlights tile and a Reading Streak tile, each with a count.
  4. Click a tile to show that list in the middle column, or use the Go menu (Unread ⌘1, Starred ⌘2, Read ⌘3, All ⌘4, Notebook ⌘5).
  5. Scroll down the sidebar to Tags and click a tag to see the links that have it.
  6. Use the gear button in the toolbar for Settings, the + button to add a link, and the question-mark button for Help.

Tips

  • Unread is everything you haven't finished. Read is what you've finished. Starred is what you've marked to keep handy. All is everything.
  • Highlights collects every passage you've highlighted or underlined, across all articles. On the Mac the Go menu calls it Notebook.
  • Unread links have a small colored dot beside the site name.
  • When you save a search, a Saved Searches section appears in the sidebar above Tags.
  • The small button beside the Tags heading (the sliders icon) opens the tag manager.
  • There's no account. Your library syncs between your devices through your own iCloud.
Use columns on iPad and on iPhone held sidewaysiPad shows your lists, the list you picked and the article side by side, and remembers where you leave the divider.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On iPad, StowJar shows up to three columns: your lists and tags, the list you picked, and the article.
  2. To change how wide the list is, drag the divider between the list and the article.
  3. Close and reopen StowJar: the divider is where you left it. Portrait and landscape each remember their own width.
  4. On iPhone, turn the phone sideways: your lists and tags show first. Tap a list and it moves aside, with that list's links beside the article.
  5. Tap the sidebar button at the top to show or hide the lists at any time.

Tips

  • In Split View, Slide Over or a narrow window, the columns stack into one, just like on iPhone.
Take the welcome tour againThe welcome tour shows the ways to save, listening, the extras, and importing; it appears on first launch and you can reopen it at any time.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the main screen, tap the gear button at the top left to open Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Help section.
  3. Tap Show Welcome Tour.
  4. Tap Continue to move through the five pages, or Back to return to one.
  5. Tap Start Reading on the last page, or Skip at any time, to close the tour.

On the Mac

  1. Choose Help › Welcome Tour from the menu bar. (You can also open Settings and click Show Welcome Tour in the Help section.)
  2. Click Continue to move through the five pages, or Back to return to one.
  3. Click Start Reading on the last page, or Skip at any time, to close the tour.

Tips

  • The tour opens by itself the first time you open StowJar.
  • The saving page has an Add a Link Now button, the listening page lets you hear the natural voice with Hear the Natural Voice and download it with Download Natural Voice, and the last page has Import Now to bring your list from another app.
Search StowJar's built-in HelpHelp is built into the app and searchable, so you can look up how something works without leaving StowJar.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the main screen, tap the question-mark button at the top right. (Or open Settings and tap Help in the Help section.)
  2. Type in the Search help field to narrow the topics.
  3. Tap a topic to expand it and read the answer.
  4. Tap Done to close Help (or the back button, if you opened it from Settings).

On the Mac

  1. Choose Help › StowJar Help, or press ⌘?. (The question-mark button in the sidebar's toolbar opens it too.)
  2. Type in the Search help field to narrow the topics.
  3. Click a topic to expand it and read the answer.
  4. Click Done to close Help.
Open a saved articleOpen anything you've saved to read it in StowJar's clean reader, then move to the next or previous item without going back to the list.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap a list, such as Unread, or a tag.
  2. Tap a link to open it. On iPhone the article fills the screen; on iPad it opens beside the list.
  3. Scroll to read. StowJar remembers where you stopped in each article.
  4. Swipe left on the article to go to the next item in the list, or right to go to the previous one.
  5. On iPhone, tap the back button at the top left (or swipe right from the left edge) to return to the list.

On the Mac

  1. Click a list, such as Unread, or a tag in the sidebar.
  2. Click a link in the middle column. The article opens in the right-hand column.
  3. Scroll to read. StowJar remembers where you stopped in each article.
  4. To move to the next or previous item, swipe sideways with two fingers on the trackpad, or choose Link › Next Link (⌘]) or Link › Previous Link (⌘[).

Tips

  • If an article hasn't finished downloading yet, you'll see Fetching article… for a moment.
  • Tapping or clicking a link inside an article opens it in StowJar's built-in browser.
  • The buttons at the top of the article are: the sparkle button (summaries and AI actions), the star button, the Aa button for text and theme settings, and the ••• button for everything else.
  • On iPhone and iPad, swiping right on the first item in the list takes you back to the list.

If something's not right

  • If you see Couldn't Load Article, tap Try Again. If it still fails, Open Original Page shows the page in the built-in browser, and Open in Safari opens it in Safari.
Mark links read or unread, and star themMark a link read when you're done so Unread stays short, and star the ones you want to keep handy.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. In a list, swipe right on a link and tap Read (or Unread if it's already read). A long swipe does it straight away.
  2. Swipe left on a link and tap Star (or Unstar).
  3. Or touch and hold a link: the top row of the menu has Star, Read and Share.
  4. In an open article, tap the star button at the top to star it, or tap the ••• button and use Read or Unread in the top row.
  5. On iPad you can also drag links from the list onto the Unread, Read or Starred tile in the sidebar.

On the Mac

  1. Right-click a link in the list. The top row of the menu has Star, Read and Share.
  2. Or select a link and choose Link › Toggle Read (⇧⌘U) or Link › Toggle Starred (⇧⌘S).
  3. In an open article, click the star button in the toolbar, or click the ••• button and use Read or Unread in the top row.
  4. You can also drag links from the list onto the Unread, Read or Starred tile in the sidebar.

Tips

  • StowJar marks an article read for you when you reach the end and then leave it. Turn this off in Settings › Reading › Mark as Read When Finished.
  • Change what swiping does in Settings › Lists › Swipe Right and Swipe Left. The choices are Mark Read / Unread, Star / Unstar, Delete, Copy Link and None.
  • Starred links show a small star in the list and appear in Starred, whether they're read or not.
  • To mark many links at once, select several and use the bulk actions.
See your reading stats and streakHow much you've read this week, this month and overall, and how many days in a row you've kept reading.
  1. On the main screen, find the Reading Streak tile under Highlights. Its number is your current streak in days.
  2. Tap it to open Reading Stats.
  3. Choose This Week, This Month or All Time to see articles read, words, reading time, links saved and highlights.
  4. Scroll down for a chart of the last 12 weeks and your most-read tags.

Tips

  • A day counts toward your streak when you finish (mark read) an article or make a highlight.
  • The streak stays alive until the end of today, so you have until midnight to keep it going.
  • Reading time is estimated from each article's length, at about 230 words a minute.
  • Stats are worked out on your device from your library; nothing is sent anywhere.

If something's not right

  • If articles you've read don't count, turn on Mark as Read When Finished in Settings, or mark them read yourself.

Saving Links

Save from any app, Safari, the clipboard, Siri and more.

Save from another app with the share sheetShare a web page, video or post from Safari or any other app to StowJar, with optional tags, star, or already-read status.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. In Safari or another app, tap the Share button (the square with an arrow). In Safari on iOS 26, tap the ••• button first, then Share.
  2. Tap StowJar in the row of apps. The Save Link panel opens and shows the web address.
  3. Optionally type a title in Title (optional). Leave it empty and StowJar uses the page's own title.
  4. Optionally tap tags under Tags, or type a new one.
  5. Turn on Mark as Read if you've already read it, or Add to Starred to star it.
  6. Tap Save at the top right. You'll see Saved to StowJar and the panel closes.

Tips

  • The link lands in Unread (or Read, if you turned on Mark as Read) as soon as StowJar is open.
  • If the page is already in StowJar, the panel says Already in your jar, shows the tags it has, and the button reads Update. See Save a page you've already saved.
  • You can share text that contains a web address, such as a message; StowJar picks out the first web address in it.

If something's not right

  • If StowJar isn't in the row of apps, see Turn on StowJar in the share sheet.
  • If the panel says No Link Found, what you shared didn't contain a web address. Share the page itself, or copy its link and use + in StowJar.
Add tags while you savePick existing tags or create new ones right in the share panel, so a link is organized the moment it's saved.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Share a page to StowJar to open the Save Link panel.
  2. Under Tags, tap any of your tags to add it. Recently used tags come first.
  3. To find a tag, type part of its name in Search or add a tag; the list narrows as you type, with tags that start with what you typed first. For example, “read” puts Read later at the top.
  4. To make a new tag, type its name and tap Add “name” as a New Tag. You can also press Return, or type a comma to finish one tag and start another.
  5. To see every tag, tap All Tags, then tap tags to check them. Type in Search or create a tag and tap Create “name” to add a new one there.
  6. Tap a chosen tag at the top (it has a small x) to remove it, then tap Save.

On the Mac

  1. Choose Share › StowJar to open the Save to StowJar panel. The cursor starts in Search or add a tag, so you can type a tag straight away.
  2. Under Tags, click any of your tags to add it. If you have lots of tags, click the Show All button below them (for example Show All 24 Tags) to see the rest.
  3. Type in Search or add a tag to narrow the list (tags that start with what you typed come first), or type a new name and click Add “name” as a New Tag. Pressing Return or typing a comma also adds it.
  4. Click a chosen tag (it has a small x) to remove it.
  5. Click Save.

Tips

  • To put a new tag inside another, type both names with a slash, like Recipes / Baking.
  • If only one tag matches what you've typed, pressing Return picks that tag rather than making a new one.
  • If you have no tags yet, the field says Add tags, separated by commas.
  • If the page is already saved, its tags are already chosen. Remove any you don't want and add others; the link ends up with exactly the tags shown.
  • On the Mac the title is the box just above Tags. Type a tag in Search or add a tag, not in the title box.
Turn on StowJar in the share sheetIf StowJar doesn't appear when you tap Share, add it to the share sheet once and it stays there.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open StowJar once after installing it, so the share extension is set up.
  2. In Safari or another app, tap the Share button.
  3. Scroll the row of app icons all the way to the end and tap More.
  4. Tap Edit, then turn on StowJar or add it to Favorites.
  5. Tap Done. StowJar now appears in the row of apps when you share.

Tips

  • Adding StowJar to Favorites moves it to the front of the row, so you don't have to scroll to find it.

If something's not right

  • The exact wording of the share sheet's More and Edit screens is set by iOS and can differ between iOS versions.
Save from the Share menu on MacUse the Share menu in Safari or any Mac app to save the page you're looking at to StowJar, with tags.

On the Mac

  1. In Safari, click the Share button in the toolbar (or choose File › Share).
  2. Choose StowJar. The Save to StowJar panel opens and shows the web address.
  3. Optionally type a title in the Title (optional) box and click tags to add them.
  4. Turn on Mark as Read or Add to Starred if you want.
  5. Click Save, or press Return. Saved appears and the panel closes. Press Esc or click Cancel to close without saving.

Tips

  • The link appears in Unread right away if StowJar is running, or the next time you open it.
  • The Share menu works in other apps too, anywhere you can share a web link.
  • The cursor starts in Search or add a tag. If the page is already saved, the panel says Already in your jar and the button reads Update.

If something's not right

  • If StowJar isn't in the Share menu, open StowJar once, then choose Edit Extensions… at the bottom of the Share menu and turn on StowJar. the name of that menu item is set by macOS and may differ between versions.
Save from Safari with the StowJar extension on iPhone and iPadThe StowJar Safari extension saves the page you're on with a single tap, without opening the share sheet.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Settings app, then go to Apps › Safari › Extensions.
  2. Tap StowJar and turn it on, then allow it on all websites.
  3. In Safari, open a web page and tap the page menu button in the address bar (the puzzle-piece button).
  4. Tap StowJar. A small panel shows Saved to StowJar and the page's title.

Tips

  • StowJar's own Settings › Save from Safari section repeats these steps.
  • The page goes to your Unread list; it appears the next time StowJar opens.

If something's not right

  • If the panel says Couldn't save, open StowJar once, then try again.
  • If it says Nothing to save here, open a web page first; the extension can't save Safari's start page or empty tabs.
  • Where Safari puts extensions (the page menu, the puzzle-piece button, or under Manage Extensions) depends on the iOS version.
Add the StowJar button to Safari on MacTurn on the Safari extension to get a StowJar button in Safari's toolbar that saves the page you're on with one click.

On the Mac

  1. In StowJar, open Settings (⌘,).
  2. In the Save from Safari section, click Turn On the Safari Extension…. Safari's extension settings open.
  3. Select the checkbox next to StowJar.
  4. In Safari, go to the page you want and click the StowJar button in the toolbar. A small panel shows Saved to StowJar.

Tips

  • If you don't see the button, choose View › Customize Toolbar… in Safari and drag the StowJar button into the toolbar. whether Safari adds the button to the toolbar by itself depends on the Safari version.
  • The page appears in Unread right away if StowJar is running.

If something's not right

  • If the panel says Couldn't save, open StowJar once, then try again.
  • If it says Nothing to save here, open a web page first.
Save a link you've just copiedWhen you copy a link and open StowJar, it offers to save it at the top of Unread, so you don't have to paste it.
  1. Copy a link in any app.
  2. Open StowJar and go to Unread.
  3. At the top of the list you'll see Save the link on your clipboard?
  4. Tap or click Save to add it, or the X to dismiss the offer.

Tips

  • Each copied link is offered only once. After you save or dismiss it, the offer stays away until you copy something new.
  • To stop these offers, turn off Settings › Lists › Suggest Links from Clipboard.
  • On the Mac you can also choose File › Save Link from Clipboard (⇧⌘V) at any time.

If something's not right

  • On iPhone and iPad, iOS may ask whether StowJar can paste from another app when you tap Save. Tap Allow Paste to continue.
Save a page you've already savedStowJar recognizes a page you already have, even under a different address, and lets you change its tags instead of making a copy.
  1. Share or add a page you saved before, from the share sheet, the Mac Share menu or Add Link.
  2. StowJar shows Already in your jar, with the tags the link already has selected.
  3. Remove any tags you don't want and add new ones.
  4. Tap or click Update (in the Mac Add Link window, Update Link). The link keeps its place in your lists and its downloaded article, and now has exactly the tags you left chosen.

Tips

  • The same page is recognized under other addresses: with tracking codes such as utm_, fbclid or igsh, with or without “www.”, and a YouTube video shared as a youtu.be link or a Short.
  • A tag you remove that no longer has any links is removed too.
  • Siri, Shortcuts and the Safari extension also update the existing link instead of making a copy; they add tags without removing any.
Save and read from the Mac menu barThe StowJar icon in the Mac menu bar saves the link on your clipboard and lists what's unread, without switching to the app.

On the Mac

  1. Copy a link in any app.
  2. Click the StowJar icon in the menu bar (a tray with a down arrow).
  3. Choose Save Link from Clipboard. It's dimmed when there's no link on the clipboard.
  4. To read something, click one of your newest unread links in the menu, or choose Read Something for a random one. StowJar opens with it.
  5. Choose Open StowJar to bring the main window forward.

Tips

  • The menu shows how many links are unread, followed by your eight newest.
  • To remove the icon, choose Hide This Icon from its menu. To bring it back, turn on Settings › Save from Safari › Show StowJar in the Menu Bar.
Add StowJar controls to Control CenterTwo StowJar controls open the app ready to save your copied link, or open a random unread article, from Control Center or the Lock Screen.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Tap the + button at the top left, then tap Add a Control.
  3. Search for StowJar.
  4. Tap Save to StowJar or Read Something to add it.
  5. Later, copy a link and tap Save to StowJar: StowJar opens with the Add Link sheet already filled in. Tap Save.
  6. Tap Read Something to open a random article from Unread.

Tips

  • The same controls can go on the Lock Screen (touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, then replace one of the controls at the bottom) or on the Action button of iPhones that have one.
  • If nothing is copied, Save to StowJar opens an empty Add Link sheet for you to type or paste into.

If something's not right

  • Controls need iOS 18 or later, and the Control Center editing steps are set by iOS and can change between versions.
Add StowJar widgetsWidgets show how much is waiting and your newest links, or suggest something to read, on your Home Screen, Lock Screen or Mac desktop.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for StowJar.
  3. Choose Unread (your unread count and newest links) or Read Something (a different unread link every hour), pick a size, and add it.
  4. Tap a link in the widget to open it in StowJar, or tap elsewhere on it to open Unread.

On the Mac

  1. Right-click the desktop and choose Edit Widgets….
  2. Search for StowJar.
  3. Choose Unread or Read Something and pick a size.
  4. Click a link in the widget to open it in StowJar.

Tips

  • Unread comes in small, medium and large. The medium and large sizes list your newest unread links.
  • On iPhone, Unread can also go on the Lock Screen as a count or a short line with your newest link.
  • Read Something comes in small and medium and shows the article's picture when it has one.
  • Widgets update after changes in StowJar. If one looks out of date, open StowJar for a moment.

If something's not right

  • The steps for adding widgets are set by iOS and macOS and can differ slightly between versions.
Save and open links with Siri and ShortcutsAsk Siri to open StowJar ready to save, or build Shortcuts that save links, fetch your lists, or update links automatically.
  1. To use Siri, say “Save a link in StowJar” or “Add a link to StowJar”. StowJar opens with the Add Link sheet.
  2. To build a shortcut, open the Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut.
  3. Add an action and search for StowJar to see its actions.
  4. Choose Save Link, then set the URL. Optionally set Title, Tags and Starred.
  5. Run the shortcut. The link is saved without opening StowJar, and the shortcut gets the saved link back to use in later steps.

Tips

  • Other Siri phrases: “Read something in StowJar” or “Open a random link in StowJar” opens a random unread article, and “Open Unread in StowJar” (or Starred, Read, All) opens that list.
  • StowJar's Shortcuts actions are: Save Link, Get Links (from a list, a tag or a search, with a limit), Get Highlights, Update Link (Mark as Read, Mark as Unread, Add to Starred, Remove from Starred, Delete), Open List, Open Link in Reader, Open Random Unread Link and Add Link.
  • Turn on Show in Share Sheet for a shortcut that uses Save Link to make your own save-and-tag button in the share sheet.
  • Settings › Shortcuts & URL Scheme lists the actions too.
Save and open links with the stowjar:// URL schemeFor power users: stowjar:// links save a page, open the Add Link sheet, or jump to a list, tag or random article from Shortcuts, launchers or other apps.
  1. To see examples you can copy, open Settings › Shortcuts & URL Scheme and look under URL Scheme.
  2. To save a link, open stowjar://save?url=ADDRESS. Add &title=TITLE and &tags=news, tech if you want. StowJar saves it and shows Unread.
  3. To open the Add Link sheet with an address filled in, use stowjar://add?url=ADDRESS.
  4. To open a list, use stowjar://open?list=unread (or starred, read, all, notebook). To open a tag, use stowjar://open?tag=NAME.
  5. To open a random unread article, use stowjar://random.

Tips

  • Percent-encode the address you pass in url= if it contains its own ? or &, or StowJar may only see part of it.
  • In Shortcuts, use the Open URLs action with a stowjar:// link.
  • Saving an address you already have doesn't make a copy; any tags you pass are added to the existing link.
Save YouTube videos and Instagram, TikTok, Reddit or Facebook postsVideos and social posts are saved as cards you can watch or view inside StowJar, with the caption or description underneath.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. In the YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit or Facebook app (or its website in Safari), tap Share on the video or post.
  2. Choose StowJar. If the app shows its own share panel, look for the option that opens the full share sheet, or copy the link and save it from StowJar.
  3. Open the saved item in StowJar. The video or post appears at the top, with the caption or description below.
  4. Play a video right in the card, or tap the Open in YouTube (or Open in Instagram, Open in TikTok and so on) button at the top to continue in that app.

On the Mac

  1. In Safari, open the video or post and choose Share › StowJar, or drag its link into StowJar.
  2. Open the saved item in StowJar. The video or post appears at the top, with the caption or description below.
  3. Play a video right in the card, or click the Open in YouTube (or Open in Instagram and so on) button in the toolbar to open it in your browser.

Tips

  • YouTube: the card has the title, channel, length, thumbnail and the full description with working links. Regular videos, Shorts, live streams and youtu.be links all work. Captions aren't saved.
  • When you hand a YouTube video off to YouTube, it picks up where you stopped watching in StowJar.
  • Instagram posts and reels, TikTok videos and Facebook posts, videos and pages are saved with the platform's own player, plus the author and caption.
  • Reddit posts are saved with their title, author, text and picture.
  • In the list, videos show a small play symbol and posts a small photo symbol beside the site name.

If something's not right

  • If a post saves with a plain title such as “Instagram post” and No caption., the platform didn't share the details (common with private posts). The embedded post and the Open in button still work.
  • Profile pages (rather than a single post) are saved as ordinary web pages, not cards.

Reading

Themes and fonts, moving between articles, offline reading and fixing articles.

Change the reader's colors (Light, Sepia, Dark, Night)Pick one of four color themes for the article page.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open any article.
  2. Tap the Appearance button (the two letter A's) at the top right.
  3. Under Theme, tap Light, Sepia, Dark or Night. The article changes straight away.
  4. Tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. Open any article.
  2. Click the Appearance button (the two letter A's) in the toolbar at the top right.
  3. Under Theme, click Light, Sepia, Dark or Night.
  4. Click Done. You can also choose themes from View › Appearance in the menu bar.

Tips

  • Light and Sepia are the light themes; Dark and Night are the dark ones. Night uses a pure black background.
  • When Switch Automatically is Off, the theme you tap is used everywhere, and StowJar's own light or dark look follows it.
  • Your theme and other reading settings follow you to your other devices through iCloud.
Switch to a dark theme automaticallyLet the reader change between your light and dark theme with the system setting or, on iPhone and iPad, with screen brightness.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. In an article, tap the Appearance button (the two letter A's) at the top right.
  2. Set Switch Automatically to Match System to follow your device's light and dark mode, or to Screen Brightness to go dark when the screen is dimmed.
  3. If you chose Screen Brightness, drag the slider to set the level ("Switch to dark below …% brightness").
  4. Tap the light theme you want (Light or Sepia) and, when the screen is dark, the dark theme you want (Dark or Night). The note under the themes shows which pair is in use.
  5. Tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. In an article, click the Appearance button (the two letter A's) in the toolbar.
  2. Set Switch Automatically to Match System.
  3. Click Done.
  4. To choose which themes are used, open StowJar › Settings… and set Light Theme and Dark Theme in the Appearance section, or use View › Appearance in the menu bar.

Tips

  • While switching automatically, tapping a theme from the other mode (for example Night during the day) turns automatic switching off and uses that theme.
  • The same choices are in Settings › Appearance: Appearance (Match System, Always Light, Always Dark, Screen Brightness), Light Theme and Dark Theme.
  • Screen Brightness only works on iPhone and iPad; a Mac always counts as bright, so use Match System there.
  • The brightness level is kept per device; the other appearance settings sync.
Change the font, text size, spacing and imagesAdjust the typeface, text size, line spacing, margins, justification and whether pictures appear in articles.
  1. Open an article and tap or click the Appearance button (the two letter A's) at the top right.
  2. Under Font, choose a typeface: San Francisco, New York, Georgia, Charter, Palatino, Avenir Next, Iowan Old Style or Menlo.
  3. Under Size & Spacing, use the small and large A buttons beside Text Size to make text smaller or larger (12 to 32).
  4. Drag the Line Spacing and Margins sliders until the page reads comfortably.
  5. Turn on Justify Text for straight right edges, or turn off Show Images to hide pictures in articles.
  6. Tap or click Done.

Tips

  • Changes apply to every article, not just the open one, and sync to your other devices.
  • Font, text size and Show Images are also in Settings › Reading.
  • Tap or click a picture in an article to see it full size; the preview has a share button and Done.
  • On the Mac you can also zoom the whole reader column; see the guide on making the Mac reader bigger.
Make the reader column bigger or smaller on the MacZoom the article column on its own, without changing the sidebar or the list.

On the Mac

  1. Open an article.
  2. Press ⌘= to make the reader bigger, ⌘- to make it smaller, or ⌘0 to return to actual size. The same commands are in View › Text Size.
  3. Or pinch with two fingers on the trackpad over the article to zoom it.
  4. To set exact sizes, open StowJar › Settings… and use the minus, plus and Reset buttons beside Reader in the Text Size section.

Tips

  • The sidebar and the list have their own sizes: View › Text Size lists them (⌥⌘ with =, - or 0 for the list; ⌃⌘ for the sidebar), and pinching over each column changes just that column.
  • Zoom ranges from 80% to 200% and is remembered on this Mac only; it doesn't sync.
  • This zoom is separate from Text Size in the Appearance panel, which changes the article's font size on all your devices.
Move to the next or previous articleSwipe or use a keyboard shortcut to go through the list you opened the article from, one article at a time.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open an article from any list.
  2. Swipe left across the article to open the next one in the list.
  3. Swipe right across the article to go back to the previous one.
  4. To return to the list, swipe right starting from the very left edge of the screen, or tap the back button.

On the Mac

  1. Open an article from any list.
  2. Swipe left with two fingers on the trackpad over the article to open the next one, or swipe right for the previous one.
  3. Or press ⌘] for Next Link and ⌘[ for Previous Link (also in the Link menu).

Tips

  • "Next" and "previous" follow the list exactly as it is shown, including its sort order, tag and any search you typed.
  • Swiping past the first or last article takes you back to the list. The keyboard shortcuts simply stop at either end.
  • The neighboring articles are prepared in advance, so they usually appear instantly.
Pick up where you left off and mark finished articles as readStowJar remembers how far you've read in each article and can mark it read when you reach the end.
  1. Read part of an article, then leave it. Your place is saved automatically.
  2. Open the article again, on this or another of your devices; it scrolls back to where you stopped.
  3. To have finished articles marked read, make sure Mark as Read When Finished is on in Settings › Reading. It is on unless you turn it off.
  4. Scroll to the end of an unread article, then leave it (go back to the list, move to another article, or switch apps). It is marked read and moves out of Unread.

Tips

  • The article is marked read when you leave it rather than the moment you reach the end, so the reader doesn't close under you while you finish the last lines.
  • If you go straight from one article to another, from the list beside the reader on iPad and Mac or by swiping, the finished one leaves Unread when you switch to another list or leave StowJar, so the list doesn't shift while you're picking articles.
  • Reading position syncs through iCloud with the rest of your library.
  • Articles you barely started or had essentially finished open at the top.
Star an article or mark it read or unreadStar articles you want to keep handy and mark articles read or unread by hand.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the article.
  2. Tap the Star button (the star) at the top right to star it. Tap it again to unstar.
  3. To change read status, tap the ••• button at the top right, then tap Read (or Unread) in the row of buttons at the top of the menu.

On the Mac

  1. Open the article.
  2. Click the Star button (the star) in the toolbar, or press ⇧⌘S.
  3. To change read status, press ⇧⌘U, or click the ••• button and choose Read (or Unread).

Tips

  • The same actions are in a link's menu in the list: touch and hold a row on iPhone or iPad, or right-click it on the Mac.
  • If you are reading from Unread and mark the article read, it leaves the Unread list; on iPhone this can return you to the list.
Get a reminder to read an article laterSchedule a notification that opens the article at a time you choose.
  1. Open the article and tap or click the ••• button at the top right.
  2. Choose Remind Me.
  3. Pick Tonight, Tomorrow Morning, This Weekend or Next Week.
  4. Or choose Choose Date…, pick a day and time, and tap or click Set.
  5. The first time, allow StowJar to send notifications when asked.
  6. When the notification arrives, tap or click it to open the article.

Tips

  • The presets are 8 PM tonight (or tomorrow if it's already later), 8 AM tomorrow, Saturday at 9 AM, and next Monday at 8 AM.
  • To see or cancel a reminder, open ••• › Remind Me again: it shows the time set and a Remove Reminder button.
  • Reminders are kept on the device where you set them, so you aren't notified twice.
  • Remind Me is also in a link's menu in the list.

If something's not right

  • If the Remind Me sheet says notifications are off, turn them on for StowJar in your device's notification settings, then try again.
Find a word or phrase in your articlesThe list's search looks inside the full text of every saved article, not just titles.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Go to a list, such as All.
  2. Tap the search field ("Search title, author, or text"). On iPhone, pull the list down if you don't see it.
  3. Type the word or phrase. The list shows articles whose title, author, description, address or text contains it.
  4. Tap an article to open it.

On the Mac

  1. Select a list in the sidebar, such as All.
  2. Press ⌘F to jump to the search field.
  3. Type the word or phrase. Matching articles appear in the list.
  4. Press Return to move into the results, then open an article.

Tips

  • The reader doesn't have a find-in-page command. To find a word, search your list: search looks inside every article's text.
  • Transcribed podcast episodes are searchable too, because the transcript becomes the article text.
  • Saving searches and more search options are covered in the organizing guides.
Read offline and download everythingArticles are stored on your device when you save them; you can check the download status and fill in anything missing.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the main screen (iPhone) or at the top of the sidebar (iPad), tap the Settings button (the gear) at the top left.
  2. Tap Offline & iCloud Sync.
  3. Under Offline Articles, check Downloaded (and Waiting to download or Failed, if shown).
  4. Tap Download All Missing to fetch anything not yet on this device.
  5. Stay connected until the "Downloading…" count finishes.

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… in the menu bar, or press ⌘,.
  2. Click Offline & iCloud Sync.
  3. Under Offline Articles, check Downloaded (and Waiting to download or Failed, if shown).
  4. Click Download All Missing.
  5. Keep StowJar open until the "Downloading…" count finishes.

Tips

  • Verify Offline Cache checks that every downloaded article still has its text and re-downloads any that don't.
  • Reset & Rebuild Cache… deletes every stored article and downloads them all again. Your highlights are kept and re-attach to the text.
  • On iPhone and iPad, downloads continue for a short while after you leave the app, and iOS may finish the rest later, most often while the device is charging on Wi-Fi.
  • Pictures load from the article's website, so they may not appear without a connection. A page snapshot keeps a complete copy with pictures.

If something's not right

  • If an article shows "Couldn't Load Article", tap Try Again once you're back online.
Keep a snapshot of the original pageSave the whole original web page, with its pictures and layout, as a PDF you can view even if the site changes or disappears.
  1. Open the article and tap or click the ••• button at the top right.
  2. Choose Open › Page Snapshot › Save Page Snapshot. It shows Saving Snapshot… while the page loads.
  3. To look at it later, choose Open › Page Snapshot › View Snapshot.
  4. In the snapshot, use the Share button to send the PDF elsewhere, or tap or click Done to close it.

Tips

  • Once a snapshot exists, the Page Snapshot menu also has Share Snapshot PDF, Save New Snapshot (replace it with a fresh copy) and Delete Snapshot.
  • To snapshot every new article automatically, turn on Save a Snapshot of Every New Page in Settings › Page Snapshots. Videos and social posts are skipped.
  • When you save a link to a PDF, the original PDF file is kept as its snapshot automatically, and the reader shows the PDF's text.
  • Snapshots are kept on this device only and don't sync. Settings › Page Snapshots shows how many you have and the space used, with Delete All Snapshots.
  • Snapshots use any website login you made in StowJar's built-in browser.
Read articles from sites you subscribe toLog in to a paywalled site once in StowJar's built-in browser so articles from that site download in full.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the main screen (iPhone) or at the top of the sidebar (iPad), tap the Settings button (the gear) at the top left.
  2. In the Advanced section, tap Log in to a Website….
  3. Type the site's address in the "Enter a web address" field and go to it.
  4. Sign in to the site as you normally would, then tap Done.
  5. Open an article from that site that came in cut short, tap the ••• button, and choose Edit › Fetch Article Again.

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… in the menu bar, or press ⌘,.
  2. In the Advanced section, click Log in to a Website….
  3. Type the site's address in the "Enter a web address" field and press Return.
  4. Sign in to the site, then click Done.
  5. Open an article from that site that came in cut short, click the ••• button, and choose Edit › Fetch Article Again.

Tips

  • You only need to log in once per site; StowJar reuses that session whenever it downloads articles, including sites that use single sign-on.
  • Articles you save after logging in download in full without any extra step.
  • Logins are made on each device separately.

If something's not right

  • If an article is still cut short, the site may have logged you out. Log in again and choose Fetch Article Again.
  • If the text still won't come through, choose ••• › Open › Original Page Here to read the page in the built-in browser, where you're signed in.
Fix an article that didn't come out rightEdit an article's title and text yourself when parts are missing, duplicated or cluttered.
  1. Open the article and tap or click the ••• button at the top right.
  2. Choose Edit › Article Text.
  3. In Edit Article, correct the title at the top if needed.
  4. Edit the text below it. It is written in Markdown: # starts a heading, bold makes bold text, and a blank line starts a new paragraph.
  5. Tap or click Save.

Tips

  • Your highlights re-attach to the matching text after you save, as long as that text is still there.
  • To throw away your edits and start again from the website, tap or click the ••• button in the Edit Article sheet and choose Re-download Original.
  • To change the list thumbnail, title, author or tags, choose ••• › Edit › Title, Tags & Image; you can pick a photo, paste an image address or choose one of the article's own images.
Download an article again or open the original pageRe-download an article that failed or came out wrong, or read the original page in the built-in browser or your web browser.
  1. Open the article and tap or click the ••• button at the top right.
  2. To download it again, choose Edit › Fetch Article Again.
  3. To read the original page inside StowJar, choose Open › Original Page Here.
  4. To open it in your web browser instead, choose Open › In Safari.

Tips

  • Fetch Article Again replaces any edits you made to the article text, without asking.
  • If an article couldn't be downloaded, the reader shows "Couldn't Load Article" with Try Again, Open Original Page and Open in Safari buttons.
  • On the Mac, Link › Open in Browser (⇧⌘O) opens the selected link in your default browser.
  • The built-in browser's toolbar (at the bottom on iPhone and iPad) has Back, Forward, Reload, Save Link and a share button.
Watch YouTube videos and view social postsSaved YouTube videos play right in the reader, and Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Reddit posts show as cards you can hand off to their app.
  1. Open a saved YouTube video. The player is at the top, followed by the channel, length and the video's description.
  2. Tap or click the player to watch it inside StowJar.
  3. To keep watching in YouTube, where you're signed in, tap or click Open in YouTube at the top right. Playback picks up where you stopped.
  4. For an Instagram, TikTok, Facebook or Reddit post, the post appears at the top with its author and caption below.
  5. When an Instagram, TikTok or Facebook video finishes, tap or click Play Again just above it, then play it again in the player.
  6. To see comments or more from the account, tap or click Open in Instagram (or Open in TikTok, Open in Facebook, Open in Reddit) at the top right.

Tips

  • Instagram, TikTok and Facebook videos play in those sites' own players, which stop on an end screen. Play Again reloads the player so the video can play from the start.
  • On iPhone and iPad the Open in button uses the platform's app when it's installed, otherwise the website. On the Mac it opens the website in your default browser.
  • The Watch on YouTube link under the player also hands off to YouTube.
  • YouTube captions are not downloaded, so a video's text in StowJar is its description.
  • Automatic page snapshots skip videos and social posts.
Turn a podcast episode into a transcriptTranscribe a saved podcast episode on your device so you can read and search it.
  1. Save the web page of a podcast episode, or a direct link to an audio file.
  2. Open it. A bar with a waveform appears at the top of the reader.
  3. Tap or click Transcribe Episode in that bar. For an episode web page that already has text, the button reads Transcribe Again instead; tap or click it.
  4. If asked, allow speech recognition.
  5. Wait while StowJar downloads the audio and transcribes it. Long episodes can take a while.
  6. When the bar says "Transcript ready", the transcript replaces the page text, in paragraphs marked with timestamps.

Tips

  • Transcription happens on your device; the audio isn't sent anywhere by StowJar.
  • The transcript uses your device's language, or US English if that isn't available.
  • Use Transcribe Again in the same bar to redo it.
  • On an episode's web page the button may say Transcribe Again even before the first transcript. Tap it to make one.
  • Once transcribed, the episode's words turn up in search.

If something's not right

  • "Speech recognition permission was not granted": allow StowJar under Privacy › Speech Recognition in your device's settings.
  • Audio files larger than 200 MB can't be transcribed.
  • If no transcribe bar appears, StowJar couldn't find the episode's audio on the page; try saving a direct link to the audio file instead.
Copy text or the whole articleCopy a selection, the article's link, or the whole article as plain text or Markdown.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. To copy part of an article, touch and hold a word, then drag the handles to select the text you want.
  2. Tap Copy. It's the first button in the menu that appears, before Highlight, Underline and Highlight Color.
  3. To copy everything, tap the ••• button at the top right and choose Copy.
  4. Choose Link, Whole Article as Text or Whole Article as Markdown.

On the Mac

  1. To copy part of an article, select the text and press ⌘C, or right-click it and choose Copy.
  2. To copy everything, click the ••• button in the toolbar and choose Copy.
  3. Choose Link, Whole Article as Text or Whole Article as Markdown.
  4. Or press ⇧⌘C to copy the link of the selected article.

Tips

  • On the Mac, the right-click menu lists Highlight, Underline and Highlight Color at the top, with Copy below them.
  • Whole Article as Markdown keeps headings, links and formatting, which is handy for notes apps.
Share or export an article (EPUB, Markdown, PDF)Send an article's link to another app, or save the article as an EPUB, Markdown file or PDF.
  1. Open the article and tap or click the ••• button at the top right.
  2. To share the link, tap or click Share in the row of buttons at the top of the menu, then pick an app or person.
  3. To export the article, choose Export.
  4. Choose EPUB (Kindle & Books), Markdown File or PDF.
  5. In the share sheet that appears, pick where to send or save the file.

Tips

  • PDF is only offered while the article is open in the reader, and saves the article as it looks there.
  • The EPUB file opens in Apple Books and can be sent to a Kindle.
  • If the article has highlights, Export also offers Highlights as a Markdown file, and, when you've set them up, Send Highlights to Readwise, Send to Notion and Send to Obsidian.
  • A saved page snapshot can be shared as a PDF from ••• › Open › Page Snapshot › Share Snapshot PDF.

Listening

Have articles read aloud, choose a voice and control playback.

Listen to an articleHave StowJar read a saved article aloud to you.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. In any list, touch and hold the link you want to hear.
  2. Tap Listen, then tap Listen Now.
  3. Or, while reading the article, tap the ••• button at the top right, then tap Listen › Listen Now.
  4. The player bar appears at the bottom of the screen and reading starts with the article's title.

On the Mac

  1. In any list, right-click the link you want to hear.
  2. Choose Listen › Listen Now.
  3. Or, while reading the article, click the ••• button in the toolbar, then choose Listen › Listen Now.
  4. The player bar appears at the bottom of the window and reading starts with the article's title.

Tips

  • If something is already playing, it moves to the top of Up Next so you can come back to it.
  • The player stays on screen while you move around the app, so you can keep browsing or reading something else.
  • When an article finishes and Mark as Read When Finished is on in Settings › Reading, it's marked as read.
  • Listening uses the natural voice if you've downloaded it and the article is in English; otherwise it uses the best Apple voice on your device.

If something's not right

  • If only the title is read, the article text may not have downloaded. Open the link's menu and choose Edit › Fetch Article Again, then try again.
Queue articles with Up NextLine up several articles so they play one after another.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Touch and hold a link in any list, or tap the ••• button while reading it.
  2. Tap Listen, then tap Add to Up Next.
  3. Repeat for each article you want to queue. The player bar shows how many are up next.
  4. To see the queue, tap the article title in the player bar. Your queue is listed under Up Next.
  5. To start one straight away, tap its play button. To take one out, tap its remove button (the minus sign).

On the Mac

  1. Right-click a link in any list, or click the ••• button while reading it.
  2. Choose Listen › Add to Up Next.
  3. Repeat for each article you want to queue. The player bar shows how many are up next.
  4. To see the queue, click the article title in the player bar. Your queue is listed under Up Next.
  5. To start one straight away, click its play button. To take one out, click its remove button (the minus sign).

Tips

  • If nothing is playing, Add to Up Next starts that article right away.
  • Add to Up Next is dimmed for an article that's already playing or already queued.
  • Articles play in the order you added them. You can't drag to reorder the queue; use the play button on a queued article to jump to it (the one that was playing goes back to the top of the queue).
  • When an article ends, the next one in Up Next starts automatically. When the queue is empty, listening stops and the player bar goes away.
  • Up Next isn't saved: Stop Listening clears it, and so does quitting StowJar.
Use the player bar and the Listen screenPause, skip by paragraph, move to the next article or stop listening.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. While an article is playing, find the player bar at the bottom of the screen. The ring around the headphones fills up as the article progresses.
  2. Tap the play or pause button in the middle to pause or carry on.
  3. Tap the circular arrow on the left to go back one paragraph, or the circular arrow on the right to skip ahead one paragraph.
  4. Tap the article title in the player bar to open the Listen screen. It shows which paragraph is being read, for example "Paragraph 4 of 23".
  5. On the Listen screen, tap the Next Article button (the arrow with a bar) to jump to the next article in Up Next.
  6. To finish, tap Stop Listening at the bottom of the Listen screen, then tap Done if the screen is still open.

On the Mac

  1. While an article is playing, find the player bar at the bottom of the window. The ring around the headphones fills up as the article progresses.
  2. Click the play or pause button in the middle to pause or carry on.
  3. Click the circular arrow on the left to go back one paragraph, or the circular arrow on the right to skip ahead one paragraph.
  4. Click the article title in the player bar to open the Listen screen. It shows which paragraph is being read, for example "Paragraph 4 of 23".
  5. On the Listen screen, click the Next Article button (the arrow with a bar) to jump to the next article in Up Next.
  6. To finish, click Stop Listening at the bottom of the Listen screen.

Tips

  • To get the player bar out of the way, pause, then tap the ✕ at its right end (or touch and hold the bar and choose Stop Listening). Next time you choose Listen Now on that article, it picks up where you stopped.
  • Skipping back from the middle of a paragraph goes to the start of the previous paragraph. The title counts as the first paragraph.
  • Next Article is dimmed when nothing is queued. Skipping to the next article this way doesn't mark the one you left as read.
  • Stop Listening also clears Up Next.
  • The Listen screen is also where you change the speed and the voice.
Change the listening speedPlay articles faster or slower, from 0.8× to 2×.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. While an article is playing, tap the article title in the player bar to open the Listen screen.
  2. Tap Speed in the Voice section.
  3. Choose 0.8×, Normal, 1.25×, 1.5×, 1.75× or 2×.
  4. Tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. While an article is playing, click the article title in the player bar to open the Listen screen.
  2. Click the Speed menu in the Voice section.
  3. Choose 0.8×, Normal, 1.25×, 1.5×, 1.75× or 2×.
  4. Click Done.

Tips

  • The speed you pick is remembered for every article until you change it.
  • Changing the speed starts the current paragraph again at the new speed.
  • On iPhone and iPad, set the speed before you lock the screen when you're using a natural voice. Changing it while StowJar is in the background throws away the audio it prepared ahead, so an Apple voice may take over until you open the app again.
Stop listening after a while with the sleep timerHave listening pause after a set time, or when the current article ends.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. While an article is playing, tap the player bar at the bottom of the screen to open Listen.
  2. Tap Sleep Timer.
  3. Choose 5 Minutes, 10 Minutes, 15 Minutes, 30 Minutes, 45 Minutes, 1 Hour or End of Article.
  4. Tap Done. A moon and the time left appear on the player bar.

On the Mac

  1. While an article is playing, click the player bar at the bottom of the window to open Listen.
  2. Click Sleep Timer and choose how long, or End of Article.
  3. Click Done. A moon and the time left appear on the player bar.

Tips

  • When the timer runs out, listening pauses where it is. Press play to carry on from there.
  • With End of Article, the next article in Up Next is kept ready; press play to start it.
  • To cancel the timer, set Sleep Timer back to Off. Stopping listening also turns it off.
Highlight the sentence you're hearingSave the sentence being read aloud as a highlight with one tap, without finding it on the page.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. While StowJar is reading an article, tap the player bar at the bottom of the screen to open Listen.
  2. Tap Highlight What's Being Read.
  3. A line under the button shows the sentence that was saved.

On the Mac

  1. While StowJar is reading an article, click the player bar to open Listen.
  2. Click Highlight What's Being Read.
  3. A line under the button shows the sentence that was saved.

Tips

  • Highlights use your default highlight color and appear in the article, its Highlights list and the Notebook, like any other highlight.
  • Nothing is saved while the title is being read.
Control listening from the Lock Screen, AirPods or Apple WatchKeep listening with the screen locked and control playback without opening StowJar.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Start listening to an article, then lock your iPhone or iPad or switch to another app. Listening carries on.
  2. On the Lock Screen or in Control Center, find the player showing the article's title and site.
  3. Use play and pause there. The ⏮ and ⏭ buttons go back or ahead one paragraph.
  4. With AirPods, press the stem once to pause or carry on, twice to go ahead a paragraph, or three times to go back one. Other headphones' previous and next buttons do the same.
  5. On Apple Watch, open Now Playing to pause, play, or go back or ahead a paragraph while your iPhone plays the article.

On the Mac

  1. Start listening to an article. You can switch to other apps and it keeps playing.
  2. Click Control Center in the menu bar to see the article in Now Playing.
  3. Use play and pause there. The ⏮ and ⏭ buttons go back or ahead one paragraph.

Tips

  • Skipping always moves a whole paragraph, so you know where you'll land. At the end of an article, going ahead starts the next one in Up Next.
  • If your headphones disconnect, listening pauses instead of playing out loud. A phone call or other interruption pauses it too.
  • On iPhone and iPad, the natural voice prepares up to 15 minutes ahead while StowJar is open. See the guide on why the voice changes in the background.
Download the natural voiceGet human-sounding voices that run on your device, free and offline.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi. The download is 330 MB.
  2. Tap Settings (the gear button) at the top left of the main screen on iPhone, or at the top of the sidebar on iPad.
  3. In the Natural Voice section, tap Hear the Voices if you'd like to listen to samples first.
  4. Tap Download Natural Voice.
  5. Keep StowJar open while Downloading Natural Voice… shows its progress, then wait for Checking the download… to finish.
  6. When you see Natural voice is ready, tap Done. New articles in English are now read with the natural voice.

On the Mac

  1. Make sure you have a good internet connection. The download is 330 MB.
  2. Choose StowJar › Settings… from the menu bar, or press Command-Comma.
  3. In the Natural Voice section, click Hear the Voices if you'd like to listen to samples first.
  4. Click Download Natural Voice.
  5. Wait while Downloading Natural Voice… shows its progress, then for Checking the download… to finish.
  6. When you see Natural voice is ready, click Done.

Tips

  • You can also download it from the Listen screen (tap the title in the player bar), from the Voices screen, or during the welcome tour.
  • It's downloaded once, from Hugging Face, and then runs entirely on your device. What you listen to never leaves it.
  • The natural voice needs an iPhone or iPad with an A14 chip or later, or a Mac with Apple silicon. On other devices the Natural Voice section doesn't appear and StowJar uses Apple's voices.
  • The voice is stored on this device only and isn't included in backups or synced. Download it separately on each device.
  • To stop a download, tap Cancel Download.

If something's not right

  • "You're offline." Connect to the internet and tap Download Natural Voice again.
  • "The download stalled." Try again on a stronger connection, ideally Wi-Fi.
  • "There isn't enough free space." Free up about 330 MB and try again.
  • "The download was damaged." Tap Download Natural Voice to try again.
  • On iPhone and iPad, switching to another app during the download only gives it a few extra minutes. Stay in StowJar until it finishes.
Remove the natural voice to free up spaceDelete the downloaded natural voice and go back to Apple's voices.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap Settings (the gear button) at the top left of the main screen on iPhone, or at the top of the sidebar on iPad.
  2. Scroll to the Natural Voice section.
  3. Tap Remove Natural Voice.
  4. Tap Done. Listening now uses Apple's voices.

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… from the menu bar, or press Command-Comma.
  2. Scroll to the Natural Voice section.
  3. Click Remove Natural Voice.
  4. Click Done. Listening now uses Apple's voices.

Tips

  • Removing it frees 330 MB on this device only. Other devices keep their copy.
  • If you'd chosen one of the natural voices, your voice goes back to Automatic.
  • You can download it again at any time.
Choose a voice and hear samplesPick the voice that reads your articles, after hearing each one.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. While an article is playing, tap its title in the player bar, then tap Voice. Or go to Settings › Natural Voice and tap Voice (or Hear the Voices if you haven't downloaded it).
  2. On the Voices screen, tap the play button beside any voice to hear a sample. Tap it again to stop.
  3. Tap Automatic to let StowJar pick the best voice for each article.
  4. Or tap a name under Natural Voices (American or British, female or male) to use it.
  5. Or tap a name under Apple Voices to use one of your device's voices. Each is labelled Premium, Enhanced, Standard or Personal Voice.
  6. A checkmark shows the voice in use. Tap the back button when you're done.

On the Mac

  1. While an article is playing, click its title in the player bar, then click Voice. Or open Settings, go to the Natural Voice section and click Voice (or Hear the Voices).
  2. On the Voices screen, click the play button beside any voice to hear a sample. Click it again to stop.
  3. Click Automatic to let StowJar pick the best voice for each article.
  4. Or click a name under Natural Voices (American or British, female or male) to use it.
  5. Or click a name under Apple Voices to use one of your Mac's voices. Each is labelled Premium, Enhanced, Standard or Personal Voice.
  6. A checkmark shows the voice in use.

Tips

  • There are 12 natural voices: Heart, Bella, Nicole, Sarah, Kore, Michael, Fenrir and Puck (American), and Emma, Isabella, George and Fable (British). Automatic uses Heart when the natural voice is downloaded.
  • You can play natural voice samples before downloading, but you can only choose one after downloading it.
  • Playing a sample pauses whatever you're listening to. Tap play in the player bar to carry on.
  • Changing the voice starts the current paragraph again with the new voice.
  • The Apple Voices list shows voices for the language of the article you're listening to. A voice you pick is only used for articles in its language; other articles use the best voice for their language.
Listen in your own Personal VoiceHave articles read in the Personal Voice you created on your device.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. If you haven't made a Personal Voice yet, create one in the Settings app under Accessibility › Personal Voice.
  2. In StowJar, start listening to an article, tap its title in the player bar, then tap Voice.
  3. Scroll to Apple Voices and tap Use My Personal Voice.
  4. When asked, allow StowJar to use your Personal Voice.
  5. Your Personal Voice appears at the top of Apple Voices with a checkmark.

On the Mac

  1. If you haven't made a Personal Voice yet, create one in System Settings under Accessibility › Personal Voice.
  2. In StowJar, start listening to an article, click its title in the player bar, then click Voice.
  3. Scroll to Apple Voices and click Use My Personal Voice.
  4. When asked, allow StowJar to use your Personal Voice.
  5. Your Personal Voice appears at the top of Apple Voices with a checkmark.

Tips

  • Your Personal Voice is only used for articles in the language you recorded it in. Other articles use the best voice for their language.

If something's not right

  • If you see "No Personal Voice is available", finish creating one in Settings › Accessibility › Personal Voice (System Settings on a Mac), and make sure StowJar is allowed to use it, then try again.
Listen to articles that aren't in EnglishThe natural voice reads English; other languages are read with Apple's voices.
  1. Start listening to the article as usual with Listen › Listen Now.
  2. StowJar works out the article's language from its text.
  3. English articles are read with the natural voice if you've downloaded it.
  4. Articles in other languages are read with the best Apple voice installed for that language. The Listen screen says "Natural voices read English. This article is read with a system voice."

Tips

  • For a better voice in another language, download a Premium or Enhanced voice for that language in your device's Settings › Accessibility › Read & Speak (on some versions, Spoken Content). On a Mac this is in System Settings.
  • British natural voices read English with a British accent; the American ones with an American accent.
Why the voice changes when your screen is lockedOn iPhone and iPad the natural voice prepares audio ahead, and an Apple voice fills in if that runs out in the background.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. When you start an article, the player bar shows Preparing voice… for a moment while the natural voice gets its first sentence ready.
  2. While StowJar is open on screen, it prepares up to about 15 minutes of the article ahead of where you're listening.
  3. When you lock the screen or switch apps, StowJar keeps playing what it has prepared, but iOS doesn't let it prepare more.
  4. If the prepared audio runs out, an Apple voice carries on reading from that point so listening doesn't stop.
  5. Open StowJar again and the natural voice takes over again from the next paragraph.

Tips

  • To avoid the switch, start listening and leave StowJar open for a while before you lock the screen, so it can prepare more.
  • Set the speed and voice before locking. Changing either while StowJar is in the background discards what was prepared.
  • Skipping far ahead from the Lock Screen can go past the prepared audio, which also brings in the Apple voice.
  • This doesn't happen on the Mac, where the natural voice can keep preparing in the background.

If something's not right

  • If the Listen screen says "The natural voice stopped working", an Apple voice reads for the rest of the session. Quit and reopen StowJar to try the natural voice again. If it keeps happening, remove the natural voice in Settings and download it again.
Fix listening when there's no soundWhat to check when an article seems to play but you can't hear it.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Turn the volume up with the side buttons while the article is playing.
  2. Check where the audio is going: open Control Center and look at the output shown in the Now Playing controls. It may be going to AirPods, a speaker or a car you're connected to.
  3. Check the player bar. If the button shows play rather than pause, listening is paused. Tap play.
  4. If the player bar says Preparing voice…, wait a few seconds for the natural voice to start.
  5. If it still won't play, tap the title in the player bar, tap Stop Listening, and start the article again.

On the Mac

  1. Turn up your Mac's volume and check the output device in Control Center › Sound.
  2. Check the player bar. If the button shows play rather than pause, listening is paused. Click play.
  3. If the player bar says Preparing voice…, wait a few seconds for the natural voice to start.
  4. If it still won't play, click the title in the player bar, click Stop Listening, and start the article again.

Tips

  • The Ring/Silent switch (or Silent mode) doesn't mute StowJar's listening. If you hear nothing, it's the volume or the output device.
  • Listening pauses on its own when headphones disconnect, during a phone call, or when you play a voice sample. Tap play to carry on.

If something's not right

  • If only the title is read and then it stops, the article text is missing. Open the link's menu, choose Edit › Fetch Article Again, and try again.
Make the voice sound less roboticSwitch to the natural voice or download a higher-quality Apple voice.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. For English articles, download the natural voice: in StowJar's Settings, tap Download Natural Voice in the Natural Voice section.
  2. If your device can't use the natural voice, or the article isn't in English, open the Settings app and go to Accessibility › Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on some versions) › Voices.
  3. Choose the language, then download a voice marked Premium or Enhanced, such as Zoe, Ava or Evan for English (about 200 MB).
  4. Back in StowJar, tap the title in the player bar, tap Voice, and choose the new voice under Apple Voices (or leave it on Automatic).

On the Mac

  1. For English articles, download the natural voice: in StowJar's Settings, click Download Natural Voice in the Natural Voice section.
  2. If your Mac can't use the natural voice, or the article isn't in English, open System Settings and go to Accessibility › Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on some versions) › System Voice › Manage Voices.
  3. Download a voice marked Premium, such as Zoe, Ava or Evan for English.
  4. Back in StowJar, click the title in the player bar, click Voice, and choose the new voice under Apple Voices (or leave it on Automatic).

Tips

  • When only the basic built-in voices are installed, the Listen screen shows a Get a natural-sounding voice tip with these directions.
  • Automatic always picks the best-quality voice installed for the article's language, so a newly downloaded Premium voice is used without choosing it.
  • Premium and Enhanced voices are free from Apple and work offline.

If something's not right

  • If the voice suddenly sounds different while your iPhone is locked, see the guide on why the voice changes when your screen is locked.

Organizing

Tags, search, saved searches, bulk changes and cleanup.

Create a new tagMake a tag by typing it on a link, or add it in the Tags manager.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the main screen (on iPad, in the sidebar), tap the Manage button (the sliders icon) beside Tags. You can also go to Settings › Tags.
  2. Type the name in the New tag field at the top.
  3. Tap Add.
  4. Tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. In the sidebar, click the Manage button (the sliders icon) beside Tags, or choose StowJar › Settings… and click Tags.
  2. Type the name in the New tag field at the top.
  3. Click Add, then Done.

Tips

  • The quickest way to create a tag is to type a new name when you edit a link's tags or save a link: the tag is created and added in one step.
  • Type a slash to create a nested tag, for example Dev / Swift.
  • Tag names are matched without regard to capital letters, so typing recipes reuses an existing Recipes tag.
  • The Tags section appears on the main screen once you have at least one tag.
  • When you take a tag off its last link, StowJar removes that tag too, unless it has tags nested under it. Tags you add in the Tags manager stay until you delete them.
Nest tags inside other tagsPut tags under a parent tag, like folders; choosing the parent shows links from every tag under it.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. To create a nested tag, type the parent and child with a slash, for example Cooking / Snacks, anywhere you type tags.
  2. To move an existing tag, touch and hold it in the Tags list on the main screen (on iPad, in the sidebar) until it lifts, then drag it onto another tag and let go.
  3. To bring a tag back to the top level, drag it onto the Tags heading (it reads Drop to move to top level), or swipe right on it and tap Top Level.
  4. Or swipe right on a tag, tap Edit, choose a parent in Nest Under, and tap Done.
  5. Tap the arrow beside a parent tag to show or hide the tags inside it.

On the Mac

  1. To create a nested tag, type the parent and child with a slash, for example Cooking / Snacks, anywhere you type tags.
  2. To move an existing tag, drag it onto another tag in the sidebar.
  3. Or right-click the tag and choose Nest Under, then pick the parent.
  4. To bring a tag back to the top level, right-click it and choose Move to Top Level, or drag it onto the Tags heading.
  5. Click the disclosure arrow beside a parent tag to show or hide the tags inside it.

Tips

  • Selecting a parent tag shows links from that tag and from every tag nested under it. The count beside it includes them too.
  • Tag names are unique across the whole tree, so you can't have two tags with the same name under different parents.
  • In the Tags manager (the sliders button beside Tags), swipe right on a tag for Indent (nest under the tag above) or Outdent (move up a level).
Give a tag a color or an emojiColor a tag and replace its tag icon with an emoji so it stands out in the sidebar and on links.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the main screen (on iPad, in the sidebar), swipe right on a tag and tap Edit. The Edit Tag sheet opens.
  2. Under Look, tap a color circle. The first circle (with a slash) means no color.
  3. For an emoji, tap one in the grid of suggestions, or tap the Emoji box to open the emoji keyboard and choose any emoji.
  4. To remove the emoji, tap the clear button (the x) beside the box, or tap the selected suggestion again.
  5. Tap Done to save, or Cancel to leave the tag as it was.

On the Mac

  1. In the sidebar, right-click a tag and choose Edit Tag….
  2. Under Look, click a color circle. The first circle (with a slash) means no color.
  3. For an emoji, click one in the grid of suggestions, or click the Emoji & Symbols button (the smiley face) beside the Emoji box and choose one.
  4. To remove the emoji, click the clear button (the x) beside the box, or click the selected suggestion again.
  5. Click Done to save, or Cancel to leave the tag as it was.

Tips

  • There are ten colors: Amber, Coral, Rose, Plum, Blue, Teal, Sage, Olive, Brown and Slate.
  • A tag holds one emoji. Typing a new one replaces the old one, and letters are ignored.
  • You can also open Edit Tag by tapping a tag in the Tags manager (the sliders button beside Tags, or Settings › Tags).

If something's not right

  • If the emoji keyboard doesn't appear on iPhone or iPad, tap the globe or smiley key on the keyboard to switch to it. The emoji keyboard needs to be one of your keyboards in the Settings app.
Rename, merge or delete a tagTidy your tags: change a name, fold one tag into another, or remove a tag from every link.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Rename: on the main screen (on iPad, in the sidebar), swipe left on a tag, tap Rename, type the new name and tap Rename.
  2. Merge: swipe right on the tag, tap Edit, then choose the tag to keep in Merge Into. Tap Merge to confirm.
  3. Delete: swipe left on the tag and tap Delete. Or swipe right, tap Edit, tap Delete Tag, and confirm.

On the Mac

  1. Rename: right-click a tag in the sidebar, choose Rename, type the new name and click Rename.
  2. Merge: right-click the tag, choose Edit Tag…, then choose the tag to keep in Merge Into. Click Merge to confirm.
  3. Delete: right-click the tag and choose Delete Tag. Or open Edit Tag…, click Delete Tag, and confirm.

Tips

  • Merging moves all the tag's links and any nested tags to the chosen tag, then removes the old one.
  • Renaming a tag to the name of another existing tag merges the two.
  • Deleting a tag doesn't delete any links. Links keep their other tags, and tags nested inside move up one level.
  • Deleting with a swipe (or from the Mac right-click menu) happens straight away without asking; deleting from Edit Tag asks first.
  • Saved searches and Focus filters that use a renamed tag are updated to the new name.
Manage all your tags in one listThe Tags manager shows your whole tag tree with link counts, and lets you add, rearrange, edit and delete tags.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the main screen (on iPad, in the sidebar), tap the Manage button (the sliders icon) beside Tags. Or go to Settings › Tags.
  2. Tap a tag to open Edit Tag, where you can rename, recolor, nest, merge or delete it.
  3. Swipe right on a tag for Indent or Outdent; swipe left for Delete.
  4. To rearrange, tap Edit and drag the handles. A moved tag takes the level of the tags around it.
  5. Tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. Click the Manage button (the sliders icon) beside Tags in the sidebar, or choose StowJar › Settings… and click Tags.
  2. Click a tag to open Edit Tag, where you can rename, recolor, nest, merge or delete it.
  3. Drag a tag up or down to move it. It takes the level of the tags around it.
  4. Click Done.

Tips

  • The number beside each tag counts its links, including links on the tags nested inside it.
  • The sliders button opens the Tags manager; there are no separate sort or display options for the tag list. Tags are listed alphabetically.
Tag links automatically with rulesSet rules such as "Site contains youtube.com, add tag Video" so new links are tagged as they download.
  1. Open Settings (on iPhone and iPad, the gear at the top left of the main screen; on Mac, StowJar › Settings…) and choose Auto-Tag.
  2. Tap (on Mac, click) Add Rule.
  3. Under When, choose a Field: Site, Link, Title, Article text, Type or Reading time, then fill in what to look for. Separate several words or sites with commas.
  4. Under Add Tag, type a tag name or tap one of your existing tags.
  5. Tap Save.
  6. To tag links you already have, tap Apply Rules to All Links Now.

Tips

  • Rules run when a link finishes downloading. Use the switch beside a rule to turn it off without deleting it.
  • Reading time rules use is at most or is at least a number of minutes; Type rules match Article, Video, Podcast or Social post.
  • Type a slash in the tag name to use a nested tag, like Cooking / Snacks.
  • When you have no rules yet, an Examples section offers ready-made rules to add with one tap.
  • With Apple Intelligence turned on, Suggest Tags with AI files new links that arrive without tags under your existing tags. It runs on your device.
  • To change or delete a rule, tap it (on iPhone and iPad you can also swipe left to delete). The rule sheet has Delete Rule at the bottom.

  1. Search in a list.
  2. Tap (on Mac, click) Save Search "…" to Sidebar at the top of the results. Or choose ••• › Save Search….
  3. Type a name, or keep the search words as the name.
  4. Tap Save. The search appears under Saved Searches on the main screen (on iPad and Mac, in the sidebar).

Tips

  • A saved search remembers the list it was made in. For example, one saved from Unread only shows unread links.
  • Changing the search words while a saved search is open updates it.
  • To rename or delete a saved search, touch and hold it (on Mac, right-click) and choose Rename or Delete Saved Search.
Sort a list and change how rows lookShow newest or oldest first, or sort by title, and choose thumbnails, descriptions and row style.

  3. Under Sort By, choose Newest First, Oldest First or Title.
  4. In the same menu, turn Show Thumbnails and Show Descriptions on or off.
  5. Choose a Row Style: Regular, Compact or Magazine.

Tips

  • These choices apply to all your lists. You'll also find them in Settings › Lists (as Sort Order, Row Style and so on), along with Show Tags.
  • To narrow a list, pick a list or tag in the sidebar (on iPhone, the main screen), then search within it. A Focus filter can also limit lists to chosen tags.

  2. Swipe left to show the left-swipe action (at first, Star or Unstar) and Delete, then click one.
  3. To change them, choose StowJar › Settings… and go to Lists.
  4. Set Swipe Right and Swipe Left to Mark Read / Unread, Star / Unstar, Delete, Copy Link or None.

Tips

  • Swiping left always offers Delete, even if you set Swipe Left to something else.
  • Deleted links go to Recently Deleted for 30 days.
Select many links and act on them at onceMark read, star, tag, copy, export or delete a whole group of links in one go.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. In a list, tap Edit at the top right.
  2. Tap the links you want, or tap Select All at the bottom left.
  3. Tap the Selected button at the bottom right (it shows how many you picked).
  4. Choose Mark as Read (or Mark as Unread), Add to Starred (or Remove from Starred), Add Tags…, Remove Tags…, Copy Links, Export as EPUB (Kindle & Books) or Delete….

  2. Use the buttons in the right-hand pane (Mark Read, Star, Add Tags, Delete) or its More Actions menu.
  3. Or click the Selection button (the checklist icon) in the toolbar, or right-click one of the selected links, for the full set of actions.
  4. To delete the selection, press Delete and confirm.

Tips

  • On iPad with a keyboard or trackpad you can also Command-click and Shift-click, as on the Mac. With several links selected, the right-hand pane shows actions for all of them.
  • Copy Links puts the web addresses on the clipboard, one per line.
  • On iPad and Mac you can drag selected links onto a tag in the sidebar to tag them, or onto the Unread, Starred or Read tile.
  • Select All picks every link in the list, including ones further down that haven't loaded yet.
  • Deleting asks you to confirm. Deleted links go to Recently Deleted for 30 days.
Find and merge duplicate linksClean Up Library finds pages you saved more than once and merges them into one copy.
  1. Open Settings (on iPhone and iPad, the gear at the top left of the main screen; on Mac, StowJar › Settings…).
  2. Choose Clean Up Library.
  3. Under Duplicates, review the list. Each row shows how many copies there are.
  4. Tap (on Mac, click) the merge button on a row to merge just that page, or the Merge All button above the list (it shows how many duplicates there are) to merge everything.

Tips

  • Saving a page you already have updates the existing link rather than adding a copy, so duplicates usually come from older saves.
  • Copies that differ only by tracking codes or "www." count as duplicates.
  • Merging keeps one copy with all the tags, highlights and stars. It stays unread if any copy was unread.
  • The extra copies go to Recently Deleted, so you can restore them for 30 days.
Restore a deleted linkDeleted links are kept in Recently Deleted for 30 days, with their highlights and tags, so you can bring them back.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the gear at the top left of the main screen (on iPad, at the top of the sidebar) to open Settings.
  2. Tap Recently Deleted. Each link shows how many days it has left.
  3. Tap the restore button (the curved arrow) beside a link, or swipe right on it and tap Restore.
  4. To bring everything back, tap Restore All.

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… (Command-comma).
  2. Click Recently Deleted. Each link shows how many days it has left.
  3. Click the restore button (the curved arrow) beside a link, or right-click it and choose Restore.
  4. To bring everything back, click Restore All.

Tips

  • Restored links come back with their highlights and tags.
  • Delete Now (swipe left, or right-click on Mac) and Delete All Now remove links for good. They can't be restored afterwards.
  • After 30 days, links are removed automatically.

If something's not right

  • Recently Deleted is kept on each device separately and isn't synced. If you deleted a link on your iPhone, restore it on your iPhone.

AI Features

Summaries, AI actions and tag suggestions, all on your device.

Summarize an articleGet a short overview and the key points of an article.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the article.
  2. Tap the sparkle button at the top left.
  3. Tap Summarize. The Summary sheet shows Summarizing… and then the summary.
  4. Tap Copy to copy it, or Regenerate for a fresh one.
  5. Tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. Open the article.
  2. Click the sparkle button in the toolbar.
  3. Choose Summarize. The Summary sheet shows Summarizing… and then the summary.
  4. Click Copy to copy it, or Regenerate for a fresh one.
  5. Click Done.

Tips

  • From a list, touch and hold (or right-click on a Mac) a link and choose AI › Summarize.
  • With Apple Intelligence, you get a two-sentence overview followed by three to five key points. Without it, StowJar picks out the article's most important sentences instead.
  • The summary is kept with the link, so opening Summarize again shows it straight away.
  • Very long articles are summarized from their first part (about the first 9,000 characters).
  • Summaries are made on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

If something's not right

  • "Fetch the article first." The article hasn't downloaded yet. Open it and wait, or choose Edit › Fetch Article Again.
  • "There is no article text to summarize." StowJar couldn't find text on the page, for example for a video.
Run an AI action on an articleAsk Apple Intelligence to explain, list key points, pull out action items and more.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the article.
  2. Tap the sparkle button at the top left.
  3. Under AI Actions, tap the one you want, such as Explain Simply, Key Points, Action Items or Questions to Consider.
  4. Wait while it shows Working on it…. The result appears under your instruction.
  5. Tap Copy to copy the result, or Run Again for a new answer.
  6. Tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. Open the article.
  2. Click the sparkle button in the toolbar.
  3. Under AI Actions, choose the one you want, such as Explain Simply, Key Points, Action Items or Questions to Consider.
  4. Wait while it shows Working on it…. The result appears under your instruction.
  5. Click Copy to copy the result, or Run Again for a new answer.
  6. Click Done.

Tips

  • From a list, touch and hold (or right-click on a Mac) a link and choose AI, then the action.
  • Results aren't saved. Copy anything you want to keep before tapping Done.
  • Very long articles are trimmed to their first part (about 9,000 characters) before the action runs.
  • Everything runs on your device with Apple Intelligence.

If something's not right

  • "AI actions need Apple Intelligence…" Your device doesn't support Apple Intelligence or it's turned off. Summarize still works without it.
  • "Apple's on-device model declined this article." Apple's content filter blocked it. Try another article or a shorter one.
  • "This link has no article text to work with." Fetch the article first with Edit › Fetch Article Again.
Create or edit your own AI actionsWrite your own instructions, such as translating an article, and run them from any article.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap Settings (the gear button) at the top left of the main screen on iPhone, or at the top of the sidebar on iPad.
  2. Under Advanced, tap AI Actions.
  3. Tap the add button (+) at the top right to make a new one, or tap an existing action to change it.
  4. Enter a Name, then write the Instruction the way you'd ask a person, for example Translate this article into Spanish.
  5. Optionally enter an SF Symbol name for its icon.
  6. Tap Save.

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… from the menu bar, or press Command-Comma.
  2. Under Advanced, click AI Actions.
  3. Click the add button (+) to make a new one, or click an existing action to change it.
  4. Enter a Name, then write the Instruction the way you'd ask a person, for example Translate this article into Spanish.
  5. Optionally enter an SF Symbol name for its icon.
  6. Click Save.

Tips

  • You don't need to paste the article into the instruction. Its title and text are added for you.
  • On iPhone and iPad, swipe left on an action to delete it, or tap Edit to drag actions into a different order. The order here is the order in the menu.
  • If you delete them all, tap Restore Examples to get the four built-in actions back.
  • Your AI actions sync with your settings, so they appear on your other devices.
  • On the Mac, right-click an action to move it up or down, or to delete it.

If something's not right

  • Save stays dimmed until both the name and the instruction are filled in.
Let AI tag new links automaticallyNew links without tags are filed under your existing tags by Apple Intelligence.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap Settings (the gear button) at the top left of the main screen on iPhone, or at the top of the sidebar on iPad.
  2. Under Advanced, tap Auto-Tag.
  3. In the On-Device AI section, turn on Suggest Tags with AI.
  4. Save links as usual. When a new link without tags finishes downloading, StowJar adds up to three of your existing tags that fit it.

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… from the menu bar, or press Command-Comma.
  2. Under Advanced, click Auto-Tag.
  3. In the On-Device AI section, turn on Suggest Tags with AI.
  4. Save links as usual. When a new link without tags finishes downloading, StowJar adds up to three of your existing tags that fit it.

Tips

  • It only chooses from tags you already have, so it won't fill your library with new tags. If you have no tags yet, it does nothing.
  • Links you tag yourself when saving are left alone.
  • It only looks at links saved in the last day, so importing a big library doesn't tag everything at once.
  • Your Auto-Tag rules run first; the AI only steps in if the link still has no tags.
  • The setting is off until you turn it on, and is dimmed on devices without Apple Intelligence. Rules work everywhere.
Get tag suggestions for one linkAsk Apple Intelligence which tags suit a link while you edit it.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Touch and hold the link in a list, or tap the ••• button while reading it.
  2. Tap Edit › Title, Tags & Image.
  3. In the Tags section, tap Suggest Tags.
  4. Check the suggestions: matching tags are selected for you, and a note below lists them. Tap a tag to select or deselect it.
  5. Tap Done to save.

On the Mac

  1. Right-click the link in a list, or click the ••• button while reading it.
  2. Choose Edit › Title, Tags & Image.
  3. In the Tags section, click Suggest Tags.
  4. Check the suggestions: matching tags are selected for you, and a note below lists them. Click a tag to select or deselect it.
  5. Click Done to save.

Tips

  • If you don't have any tags yet, the suggestions are new tag names added to the New tags, separated by commas field. Edit them before saving if you like.
  • "None of your tags seem to fit this one." means no existing tag was a good match.
  • Suggest Tags only appears on devices with Apple Intelligence turned on.
What you need for AI features, and what stays privateAI actions and tag suggestions need Apple Intelligence; everything runs on your device.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Use an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence.
  2. Turn Apple Intelligence on in the Settings app under Apple Intelligence & Siri, and let it finish downloading.
  3. In StowJar, go to Settings › AI Actions. If the note at the bottom says AI actions run on this device, you're ready.

On the Mac

  1. Use a Mac that supports Apple Intelligence.
  2. Turn Apple Intelligence on in System Settings under Apple Intelligence & Siri, and let it finish downloading.
  3. In StowJar, go to Settings › AI Actions. If the note at the bottom says AI actions run on this device, you're ready.

Tips

  • Needs Apple Intelligence: AI actions, Suggest Tags, and Suggest Tags with AI.
  • Works without it: Summarize, which picks out the article's most important sentences instead.
  • Everything runs on your device with Apple's on-device model. Nothing about your articles is sent anywhere, and there's nothing to pay for or sign in to.
  • Your AI actions sync to your other devices and work on the ones that support Apple Intelligence.

If something's not right

  • If you've just turned on Apple Intelligence and StowJar still says it isn't available, wait for the model to finish downloading, then quit and reopen StowJar.
Ask questions about an articleChat with Apple Intelligence about the article you're reading: what it concludes, what a term means, what the steps are.
  1. Open an article.
  2. Tap the sparkle button at the top left, then choose Ask About This Article.
  3. Type your question and tap the arrow (or press Return).
  4. Ask follow-up questions in the same box; StowJar remembers the conversation until you close it.

Tips

  • Answers come only from the article's text, and everything happens on your device.
  • For long articles, StowJar gives the model the parts most related to your question, since it can only read a few pages at once.
  • Check anything important against the article: AI answers can be wrong.

If something's not right

  • If it says Apple Intelligence isn't available, turn it on in Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri on a device that supports it.
  • If the model declines to answer, try wording the question differently.
Ask your whole library a questionGet an answer drawn from everything you've saved, with the articles it came from.
  1. On the main screen, tap the sparkle button at the top (Ask Your Library).
  2. Type a question, like "How long should sourdough rise?", and tap the arrow.
  3. Read the answer. Numbers like [1] point to the saved articles listed under it.
  4. Tap an article under From your saved articles to open it.

Tips

  • StowJar finds the saved articles most likely to hold the answer, then asks Apple Intelligence to answer from them. Nothing leaves your device.
  • The button appears only on devices with Apple Intelligence turned on.
  • Use specific words from the topic for the best results.

If something's not right

  • If it says nothing you've saved mentions it, try other words, or check the article has finished downloading.

Import & Export

Bring your list from another app, send to Kindle, Readwise, Obsidian and Notion.

Move your links from InstapaperImport Instapaper's CSV export; its Archive, Starred and custom folders come across as read, starred and tags.
  1. Sign in at instapaper.com, open Settings and use Export to download the CSV file.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the Settings button (the gear) at the top left of the main screen. On iPad it's at the top of the sidebar.
  2. In Import & Export, tap Import Links….
  3. Tap Choose a File… and pick the Instapaper .csv file.
  4. Check the preview: Links found, Already saved (skipped) and Will import.
  5. Under Options, turn off anything you don't want kept, or type tags in Add tags to everything (comma separated).
  6. Tap Import (the button shows how many links will be added).

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… (Command-,).
  2. In Import & Export, click Import Links….
  3. Click Choose a File… and pick the Instapaper .csv file.
  4. Check the preview: Links found, Already saved (skipped) and Will import.
  5. Under Options, turn off anything you don't want kept, or type tags in Add tags to everything (comma separated).
  6. Click Import (the button shows how many links will be added).

Tips

  • Links in Archive arrive as read. Links in Starred (or Liked) arrive starred. Links in a folder you made get that folder name as a tag.
  • Your highlighted selection, if the export has one, becomes the link's description.
  • Newer Instapaper exports include your tags; StowJar brings them across along with the folder.
  • The CSV file carries no article text. StowJar downloads each article in the background after the import.

If something's not right

  • If the preview shows Format: CSV instead of Instapaper export, the file's first line has been changed. Download a fresh export and try again.
Move your bookmarks from Raindrop.ioImport a Raindrop.io CSV export; collections become tags, favorites become starred.
  1. In Raindrop.io on the web, export your bookmarks as a CSV file.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the Settings button (the gear) at the top left of the main screen. On iPad it's at the top of the sidebar.
  2. In Import & Export, tap Import Links….
  3. Tap Choose a File… and pick the Raindrop .csv file.

  3. Click Choose a File… and pick the Raindrop .csv file.
  4. Check the preview: Links found, Already saved (skipped) and Will import.
  5. Under Options, turn off anything you don't want kept, or type tags in Add tags to everything (comma separated).
  6. Click Import (the button shows how many links will be added).

Tips

  • In Raindrop.io, export your bookmarks as CSV if you can. An HTML export works too, and is read as browser bookmarks.
  • Each bookmark's collection becomes a tag. Nested collections become nested tags (Work/Reading arrives as Work › Reading). Unsorted is left out.
  • Raindrop tags, favorites (starred), the created date and the excerpt or note (as the description) come across.
  • Raindrop's export has no read state, so everything arrives unread. Highlights in the file are not imported.
Bring over a Pocket exportImport the CSV file Pocket gave you; archived items arrive as read and Pocket tags come across.
  1. Find the export file you downloaded from Pocket (getpocket.com/export). It's a .csv file, sometimes inside a zip file; unzip it first.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the Settings button (the gear) at the top left of the main screen. On iPad it's at the top of the sidebar.
  2. In Import & Export, tap Import Links….
  3. Tap Choose a File… and pick the Pocket .csv file.

  3. Click Choose a File… and pick the Pocket .csv file.
  4. Check the preview: Links found, Already saved (skipped) and Will import.
  5. Under Options, turn off anything you don't want kept, or type tags in Add tags to everything (comma separated).
  6. Click Import (the button shows how many links will be added).

Tips

  • Items with an archive status arrive as read. Pocket tags come across. The date you saved each item is kept.
  • Pocket's CSV has no favorites column, so nothing arrives starred.
  • Pocket closed in 2025, so a new export can no longer be made. Use the file you saved before then.
  • An older Pocket export saved as a web page (HTML) imports as browser bookmarks: the links come across, but tags, read state and dates may not.
Import bookmarks from Safari, Chrome or FirefoxImport an exported bookmarks HTML file; bookmark folders become tags.
  1. Export your bookmarks from the browser on a computer. Safari: File › Export › Bookmarks…. Chrome: open the Bookmark Manager, click its ••• menu, then Export bookmarks. Firefox: Bookmarks › Manage Bookmarks, then Import and Backup › Export Bookmarks to HTML….

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the Settings button (the gear) at the top left of the main screen. On iPad it's at the top of the sidebar.

  3. Click Choose a File… and pick the bookmarks file (it ends in .html).
  4. Check the preview: Links found, Already saved (skipped) and Will import.
  5. Under Options, turn off anything you don't want kept, or type tags in Add tags to everything (comma separated).
  6. Click Import (the button shows how many links will be added).

Tips

  • Every folder a bookmark sits in becomes a tag. The browser's own top folders (Bookmarks Bar, Bookmarks Menu, Other Bookmarks, Favorites, Reading List) are left out.
  • Tags stored in Firefox bookmarks come across. The date each bookmark was added is kept when the file has it.
  • Bookmarks arrive unread and unstarred.
  • The browser menu names above are from the browsers, not from StowJar, and can change between versions.
Add PDF filesTurn PDF files from your device into articles you can read, search, highlight and listen to.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings and tap Import Links….
  2. Tap Choose a File….
  3. Pick one or more PDF files (in Files, touch and hold to select several), then tap Open.
  4. Each PDF appears in Unread as its own article.

On the Mac

  1. Drag one or more PDF files from Finder onto a list in StowJar.
  2. Or open Settings, click Import Links…, then Choose a File… and pick the PDFs.
  3. Each PDF appears in Unread as its own article.

Tips

  • The title comes from the PDF itself, or the file name if it has none.
  • The original file is kept on this device: choose ••• › Open › Page Snapshot › View Snapshot to see its layout, and Share sends the PDF.
  • The text syncs to your other devices through iCloud; the original file stays on the device you added it on.
  • Scanned PDFs that are just pictures of pages have no text to read.

If something's not right

  • If nothing appears, the file may be damaged or password protected. Open it in Files or Preview first to check.
Back up your whole library as a fileExport every link, with tags, stars, read state, dates and highlights, to one JSON file.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the Settings button (the gear) at the top left of the main screen. On iPad it's at the top of the sidebar.
  2. In Import & Export, tap Export All Links (JSON)….
  3. In the share sheet, tap Save to Files and choose a folder, or send the file with AirDrop or Mail.

On the Mac

  1. Choose StowJar › Settings… (Command-,).
  2. In Import & Export, click Export All Links (JSON)….
  3. Choose where to send the file from the sharing menu that appears, for example AirDrop, Mail or Notes.

Tips

  • The file is called StowJar Export.json. Each link includes its title, tags, starred and read state, the dates it was saved and read, the description, the author and its highlights with notes.
  • The file uses the same layout as a GoodLinks export, so it can be imported again with Import Links….
  • Importing the file brings back links, tags, stars, read state and dates, but not highlights.
  • When the file is imported, a tag with exactly one hyphen (such as self-help) becomes a nested tag (self › help).
  • On the Mac, the file is offered in a Share menu; choose the app or place to send it to.
Export an article or your highlights as a fileSave one article as Markdown, PDF or EPUB, or export highlights as Markdown or CSV.

  4. Choose where the file goes from the sharing menu.
  1. To export every highlight at once, open Settings, then Readwise, Obsidian, Notion & CSV.
  2. Under Files, choose Export All Highlights as CSV… or Export All Highlights as Markdown….

Tips

  • To copy instead of saving a file, use ••• › Copy › Whole Article as Markdown or Whole Article as Text.
  • Highlight Markdown follows the format in Settings › Highlight Export Format, where you can change the article header and the line used for each highlight. Reset to Defaults puts it back.
  • The CSV has the columns Highlight, Note, Color, Style, Title, Author, URL, Tags and Date, ready for a spreadsheet.
  • The Notebook in the sidebar also has an Export menu for every highlight shown there.
Send an article to Kindle or Apple BooksTurn one article into an EPUB book and open it in Kindle or Books.

On iPhone and iPad

Tips

  • The book is named after the article and lists the author (or the site) as its author. It ends with a link to the original page.
  • The book is text only; pictures, videos and embeds are left out.
  • Amazon's Send to Kindle accepts EPUB files: email the file to your @kindle.com address from an email you have approved in your Amazon account, or use the Kindle app.
  • Kindle appears in the share sheet when the Kindle app is installed, and Books may be under More.
Make one e-book from several articlesSelect several links and export them as a single EPUB with a chapter for each article.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open a list, such as Unread or a tag.
  2. Tap Edit at the top right.
  3. Tap the links you want in the book.

  • On the Mac, the Selection button in the toolbar (the checklist icon) has the same command.
  • Articles are included only if their text has downloaded. Pictures are left out.
Send your highlights to ReadwiseConnect Readwise with an access token and send highlights by hand or automatically.
  1. In a web browser, sign in to Readwise and open readwise.io/access_token to get your access token. Copy it.
  2. In StowJar, open Settings, then Readwise, Obsidian, Notion & CSV.
  3. Under Readwise, paste the token into Access token.
  4. Tap or click Test Connection. You should see “Connected.”
  5. Turn on Send new highlights automatically if you want new highlights sent without asking.
  6. To send everything you've highlighted so far, tap or click Send All Highlights Now.

Tips

  • Each highlight is sent with the article's title, author, web address and your note.
  • Automatic sending only sends highlights that haven't been sent before. It runs when you open StowJar, after you make a highlight, and from time to time in the background.
  • To send one article's highlights, open its ••• menu, then Export › Send Highlights to Readwise. This appears only when the article has highlights and Readwise is connected.
  • The token is stored in this device's keychain. Enter it on each device where you want automatic sending.

If something's not right

  • If you see “Readwise rejected that token.”, copy the token again from readwise.io/access_token and paste it with no extra spaces.
  • The result of the last automatic send is shown under Last Activity at the bottom of the same page.
Keep your highlights in ObsidianWrite a Markdown note per article into a folder in your Obsidian vault, or send single articles with Send to Obsidian.
  1. Open Settings, then Readwise, Obsidian, Notion & CSV.
  2. Under Markdown Folder (Obsidian vault, Logseq, Notes…), tap or click Choose Folder….
  3. Pick a folder inside your Obsidian vault (for example a folder called StowJar).
  4. Turn on Keep folder up to date automatically.
  5. Tap or click Export All Highlights Now to write the notes for the first time.

Tips

  • You get one Markdown file per article that has highlights, named after the article's title and laid out with Settings › Highlight Export Format. Files are rewritten only when something changed.
  • Another way, without folder access: under Obsidian URL Scheme, enter your Vault name and, if you like, a Folder inside the vault (optional). Then ••• › Export › Send to Obsidian opens Obsidian and creates the note. It appears only for articles with highlights.
  • The same folder option works for Logseq, iA Writer or any app that reads a folder of Markdown files.
  • The folder choice is kept on this device. Choose it again on each device where you want automatic export.

If something's not right

  • If notes stop appearing, check Last Activity at the bottom of the page for an error, then use Forget Folder and choose the folder again.
Send articles and highlights to NotionConnect a Notion integration so Send to Notion creates a page for an article with its highlights.
  1. In a web browser, go to notion.so/my-integrations and create an internal integration. Copy its token.
  2. In Notion, open the page where articles should go and share it with (connect) that integration. Copy the page's link.
  3. In StowJar, open Settings, then Readwise, Obsidian, Notion & CSV.
  4. Under Notion, paste the token into Integration token and the page link into Parent page link or ID.
  5. Open an article with highlights, open its ••• menu, then choose Export › Send to Notion.

Tips

  • Each article becomes a sub-page of your chosen page, with a bookmark to the article, its description, one quote per highlight and your notes in italics.
  • Send to Notion appears only for articles that have highlights. Notion pages are created one article at a time; there is no automatic Notion export.
  • The token is stored in this device's keychain, so enter it on each device you use.

If something's not right

  • If sending fails with an error from the service, make sure the page is shared with your integration in Notion. The message appears under Last Activity on the integrations page.

Sync & Devices

iCloud sync, widgets, Spotlight and Recently Deleted.

Sync your library with iCloudStowJar keeps your links, highlights and preferences the same on every device signed in to your iCloud account.
  1. Sign in to the same Apple Account with iCloud on each iPhone, iPad and Mac, and install StowJar on each.
  2. Open StowJar. There is no separate StowJar account or login.
  3. To check sync, open Settings. The Offline & iCloud Sync row shows the current status.
  4. Open Offline & iCloud Sync to see Status, Last successful sync and Last activity under iCloud Sync.
  5. Tap or click Check Now to save any changes and recheck your iCloud account.

Tips

  • Status can read Up to date, Syncing…, Not signed in to iCloud, or Error: followed by the reason.
  • Syncs: links, article text, tags, highlights and notes, read and starred state, reading position, and your preferences (appearance, reader and list settings, swipe actions, tag colors and emoji, Auto-Tag rules, custom and AI actions, export format, background).
  • Stays on each device: Recently Deleted, reminders, the Focus filter tags, the Spotlight setting, Readwise, Notion and folder export settings, the natural voice download, page snapshots, and on the Mac the window size and text zoom.
  • While a new device is filling up, a small badge shows Syncing from iCloud with the number of links so far.

If something's not right

  • If sync isn't working, see the guide on fixing sync.
Read on more than one deviceStart an article on one device and pick it up where you left off on another.
  1. Read an article on one device. StowJar remembers how far you got.
  2. Open StowJar on your other device and give it a moment to sync.
  3. Open the same article. It opens at the place you stopped.
  4. Links you save, highlights you make and articles you mark as read show up on your other devices the same way.

Tips

  • Articles are stored on each device so you can read offline. Article text comes across with sync, so other devices don't need to download it again.
  • A reminder set with Remind Me only notifies the device you set it on, so you aren't reminded twice.

  • Recently Deleted is kept on the device where you deleted the link. Look on that device; a restored link then syncs back to your other devices.
  • Delete Now (swipe left on iPhone and iPad, or Control-click on the Mac) and Delete All Now remove links permanently. They can't be restored afterwards.

  • Read Something shows a different unread link every hour (small and medium). Tap it to open that link.
  • On iPhone and iPad there are also two controls for Control Center or the Lock Screen: Save to StowJar opens StowJar ready to save the link on your clipboard, and Read Something opens a random unread link.
  • Widgets refresh when you leave StowJar. If one looks out of date, open StowJar and then go back.

  • It changes every three hours. Tap it to open the link.
  • Links you saved in the last month don't appear, so it only shows things you may have forgotten.

If something's not right

  • If it says older saves show up after a month, you haven't saved anything more than 30 days old yet.

Troubleshooting

Fixes for the most common problems, and how to reach us.

An article won't loadWhat to do when an article shows “Couldn't Load Article” or keeps saying “Fetching article…”.
  1. Open the article. If it shows Couldn't Load Article, read the reason underneath.
  2. Tap or click Try Again.
  3. If the site needs a subscription, open Settings, choose Log in to a Website… under Advanced, and sign in to that site in the browser that opens.
  4. Go back to the article, open its ••• menu and choose Edit › Fetch Article Again.
  5. If it still fails, use Open Original Page to read it on the website, or Open in Safari.

Tips

  • Links that failed to download show an orange warning triangle in the list.
  • To retry every failed article at once, open Settings › Offline & iCloud Sync and use Download All Missing.
  • If the text downloaded but looks wrong, open the ••• menu and choose Edit › Article Text to fix it by hand.
  • After a large import, articles from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Reddit and similar sites download one at a time with a pause, so they take longer.
  • “Fetching article…” with a spinner means it's still downloading. Check that you're online.
Pictures are missingFix missing pictures inside articles or missing thumbnails in your lists.
  1. Open Settings and make sure Show Images is on under Reading. The same switch is in the article's Appearance menu (the text size button).
  2. For thumbnails in lists, make sure Show Thumbnails is on under Lists.
  3. Check that you're online, then open the article again.
  4. If one link has the wrong picture or none, open its ••• menu and choose Edit › Title, Tags & Image to pick another.
  5. Or choose Edit › Fetch Article Again to download the article and its picture again.

Tips

  • Pictures load from the article's website rather than being stored with the text, so they need a connection. A page snapshot keeps a complete copy with pictures.
  • After a big import, a small Loading pictures badge shows progress while thumbnails are fetched.
  • E-books made with EPUB (Kindle & Books) are text only by design.
Sync isn't workingWhat to check when links, highlights or changes don't show up on your other devices.
  1. On each device, open Settings › Offline & iCloud Sync and look at Status under iCloud Sync.
  2. If it says Not signed in to iCloud, sign in to iCloud in the device's Settings (System Settings on the Mac), using the same Apple Account on every device.
  3. If it says Error:, note the message, check your internet connection, and tap or click Check Now.
  4. Keep StowJar open for a minute on the device that made the change, then on the device that should receive it.
  5. Compare Last successful sync on both devices to see which one is behind.

Tips

  • After a large import or on a new device, the first sync can take a while. A badge shows Syncing to iCloud or Syncing from iCloud with the number of links so far.
  • Some things never sync by design, including Recently Deleted, reminders, Focus filter tags, integration settings and the natural voice download.
  • If iCloud is full or iCloud access for StowJar has been turned off in the device's iCloud settings, sync will stop; the exact setting name wasn't checked.

If something's not right

  • If a device still shows Error: after a day, send the message to support@stowjar.com.
StowJar isn't in the share sheetTurn on StowJar in the share sheet or the Mac Share menu so you can save from other apps.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open StowJar once after installing it.
  2. In Safari or another app, tap the Share button (the square with an arrow). On iOS 26, Safari's Share is inside the ••• menu.
  3. Scroll the row of app icons to the end and tap More.
  4. Tap Edit, turn on StowJar or add it to Favorites, then tap Done.

On the Mac

  1. Open StowJar once after installing it.
  2. In Safari or another app, open the Share menu.
  3. Choose Edit Extensions… at the bottom.
  4. Turn on StowJar.

Tips

  • If StowJar opens but says No Link Found, the app you shared from didn't pass a web address. Try sharing the page's link instead, or copy the link and add it in StowJar.
  • Apple's share sheet editing screen varies slightly between iOS versions.
The Safari extension is missingTurn on the StowJar Safari extension so you can save the page you're on in one tap or click.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Settings app, then Apps › Safari › Extensions.
  2. Tap StowJar and turn it on.
  3. Allow it on all websites.
  4. In Safari, open the page menu (the puzzle-piece button) and tap StowJar to save the page.

On the Mac

  1. In StowJar, open StowJar › Settings….
  2. Under Save from Safari, click Turn On the Safari Extension….
  3. Select the checkbox next to StowJar in Safari's Extensions settings.
  4. If the button still isn't in Safari's toolbar, choose View › Customize Toolbar… in Safari and drag it in.

Tips

  • Saved pages land in Unread; if StowJar wasn't running, they appear the next time you open it.

If something's not right

  • If the extension says “Couldn't save”, open StowJar once, then try again.
The natural voice won't downloadWhat the download messages mean and how to get the natural voice installed.
  1. Connect to Wi-Fi. The download is 330 MB.
  2. Make sure the device has at least 330 MB of free space.
  3. Open Settings and find Natural Voice, or open the player's Listen sheet.
  4. Tap or click Download Natural Voice and keep StowJar open until it finishes.
  5. When it says Natural voice is ready, you're done.

Tips

  • Use Cancel Download to stop a download and start again later.
  • The voice model is downloaded from Hugging Face and then runs entirely on your device.
  • Keep StowJar open until the download finishes.

If something's not right

  • “You're offline” or “The download stalled”: connect to a stronger network and tap Download Natural Voice again.
  • “There isn't enough free space”: free up at least 330 MB and try again.
  • “The download was damaged” or “The voice server answered with error…”: wait a little and try again.
  • “A voice file is damaged”: tap Remove Natural Voice, then download it again.
  • If there's no Natural Voice section in Settings, this device can't run it. It needs an iPhone or iPad with an A14 chip or later, or a Mac with Apple silicon. The built-in Apple voices still work.
An import didn't bring everythingWhy some links, tags or states might be missing after an import, and how to fill the gaps.
  1. Start the import again with the same file and look at the preview before importing.
  2. Compare Links found with Already saved (skipped). Links you already have are skipped, so they aren't added twice.
  3. Check that Keep tags and folders, Keep read / archived state, Keep starred and Keep original dates are on.
  4. Check the Format line. If it doesn't name your app, the file isn't in the shape StowJar expected.
  5. After importing, wait for the Fetching articles badge to finish, then use Settings › Offline & iCloud Sync › Download All Missing for any that failed.

Tips

  • Only links starting with http or https are imported. App links, file links and entries with no address are skipped.
  • Two addresses that differ only in small ways (for example tracking codes) may count as the same link.
  • Highlights are never imported, including from a StowJar JSON backup.
  • Some exports don't carry everything: Raindrop has no read state, Pocket has no stars, and browser bookmarks have neither.
  • If you see “No links were found in” and the file name, the file isn't a supported export. Try Paste Links or Text… with its contents.
Contact supportHow to reach a person when a guide doesn't solve the problem.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the Help button (the question mark) at the top of the main screen.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Email Support, or write to support@stowjar.com.
  3. Or use the contact form at https://stowjar.com/#contact.

On the Mac

  1. Choose Help › StowJar Help.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click Email Support, or write to support@stowjar.com.
  3. Or use the contact form at https://stowjar.com/#contact.

Tips

  • Say which device and system version you're using, and your StowJar version (Settings › About › Version).
  • Describe what you were trying to do, what you expected, and what happened instead. Include any error message word for word.
  • For a problem with one article, include its web address.
  • Help Center on the Web at the bottom of Help opens these guides at stowjar.com.
Send diagnostics to supportEmail support a report that shows what StowJar was doing when something went wrong.
  1. Open Settings and scroll to Help.
  2. Tap Send Diagnostics.
  3. Under What Happened, describe what you were doing. If one article caused the problem, paste its link in Link that gave trouble.
  4. Tap Show What Will Be Sent to read the report first, if you like.
  5. Tap Email Diagnostics to Support, then send the email.

Tips

  • The report includes your app and system versions, library counts, a few settings, sync and voice status, and StowJar's activity from the last 7 days, such as voice switches and downloads that failed.
  • It never includes article titles, web addresses or highlights. A link is only included if you paste it yourself.
  • If Mail isn't set up, the share sheet opens instead so you can send the file with another email app or save it.
  • Clear Activity deletes the record on this device.

No guides match that. Try other words, or ask us.
